Is Marketing Yourself as an Artist a Full-time Job in 2018?

Marketing is undoubtedly the single most important thing in any social activity. It’s everywhere and in everything. It’s in business. It’s in creating friends. Marketing is about being yourself, true to your identity while showing and sharing your products, services, talents and qualities with the world by using various tools that help a business, a person or an artist gain exposure.

Long gone are the days of the starving artist. In 2018, whether it’s the painter or the sculptor, they have a chance of promoting their artwork and persona in various different places and with many tools both online and offline. You have Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ello, YouTube, Vimeo, Snapchat, Medium, SEO, PPC, blogging, exhibitions, galleries like Saatchi Art, Etsy, Artsy, ArtDiscover, or offline galleries, art fairs,…the list is pretty much endless. Great time to be an artist.

Being good at marketing in 2018 and years to come means one needs to dedicate a good portion of his time to it in order to see results; there are a lot of platforms to be used and a lot of opportunities to be exploited. Plus good things don’t come easily. The amount of reach we can achieve today is very good.

One of my Pinterest posts, the ice-cream drawing got 60,000 impressions in a matter of a few days. It didn’t actually convert to any tangible result but still a good indication what this platform can do for an artist if done correctly.

I must say from personal experience that doing marketing for Miroslavo is pretty much a full-time job. Needless to say, I love doing it. I enjoy marketing and I enjoy making art, so being able to promote my artwork makes me happy. It has a chance to be discovered and shared with others. I don’t want to take my creations and ideas to the grave. I prefer to share them.

What do you think? Do you enjoy marketing? Do you think it’s difficult to market in 2018 regardless of what field you work in? Share your experiences and thoughts below, I would love to hear them![:]
